When strong winds are forecast, the useful question is what conditions are expected along this crossing at this time? This project does not publish one wind-speed cutoff that applies to every vessel, terminal and direction.
Read a marine forecast, not just a city weather icon
The MGM regional marine forecast lists wind direction, wind force and wave height by time for Marmara. A sunny weather icon does not establish calm seas. Check the units: Beaufort force in this bulletin is not interchangeable with the same numerical value in km/h or knots.
Direction, waves and timing belong together
Wind at one shoreline may not represent an entire crossing. Routes facing different directions need not experience the same conditions. Look at the forecast interval near departure and the relevant sea area. Do not infer an operator’s decision from a single wind reading in a phone app. Turkish forecasts may refer to lodos and poyraz; the directional arrows and stated units help avoid relying on a name alone.
Our archive does not identify weather-caused cancellations
The records do not include a cancellation reason or the time the decision was announced. Cancellations appearing on a stormy day therefore do not establish that every one was caused by weather. Maintenance, timetable changes and other operating conditions cannot be verified from these fields either. Separating prolonged interruptions for a weather study is a research choice, not proof of the underlying cause.
A practical checking sequence
- Select your date, terminals and direction in the sailing tracker.
- Read both wind and wave information in the marine forecast.
- Treat any risk estimate as supporting information with uncertainty.
- Verify the operator’s official status again before travelling.
